In heavily urbanized downtown Detroit, at Hart Plaza, a Tier 1 Internet Service Provider was tasked with bringing fiber-optic cables to a temporary stage constructed for a National Football League draft event. The installation required 800 feet of fiber to be installed with less than two weeks notice.
Contractors using conventional trenching methods met disaster, when the equipment cut into and partially collapsed the basement of a local business, bringing the installation to a halt. The situation had become desperate as obtaining permits for alternative means to deliver the bandwidth required within such a short time frame became impossible.
The issue became even more challenging as the cost of trenching in the area was far over budget and there were many large utilities under the streets, presenting a high risk for damage. There was an absence of aerial utility poles and nowhere to place ground-level conduits.
Hart Plaza was also a high-traffic area for vehicles and pedestrians, making fiber installation by traditional methods more difficult and disruptive.
TRAXyL provided their patented FiberTRAX solution, etching a small ½” x ½” channel into the pavement surface, placing a micro-armored fiber cable into the channel, and protecting it with their rugged FiberTRAX Top Coat. TRAXyL installed 800 feet of fiber in just a fraction of time compared to other conventional methods, about four hours on a Saturday. With TRAXyL’s Minimally Disruptive Installation process on both sidewalk and road, pedestrians and vehicles could continue moving without delays.
